Caring for Your School Device
Do your best to help your student understand their responsibility for their school device, and how valuable and breakable it is. We will also be working a lot on these same topics at school. You may decide to work out a family agreement that outlines additional home-based consequences if the device is damaged (such as "earning back" the replacement or repair cost). Feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns. The information below may help you know more about what to expect and what to watch out for.
- 22% of school-issued devices are damaged within the first year
- Most (48%) are damaged in transit from school/home and back. 40% are damaged at home.
- Cracked screens are the most common device ‘injury’
There are care and use guidelines in the Student and Family handbook. Please read and encourage your student to follow these. Your student can keep damage to a minimum when he/she keeps track of where the device is at all times. Often devices get damaged when they fall from a desk or table, or the bag that they are in is handled roughly. We have provided a case for your iPad and also a soft carry bag. Chromebooks have a soft bag only. No deductible insurance that covers accidental damage is available at a cost of $40 per school year.
